When Fiona Sinclair Architects approached us in August 2014 , the distillery which had lain dormant for 90 years was about to be re- awakened. Situated in the Scottish Borders the project was nearing the end of a 3 year reconstruction involving meticulous planning and attention to detail. The brief, to maintain its’ heritage and character but function and operate as a thoroughly modern building in the 21st century. ABP was chosen for its’ wealth of experience and expertise to provide a modern roofing solution designed in keeping the character of this iconic 19th century building.

A round trip of 700 miles , hardboard templates in hand our surveyor meticulously measured the 1360mm wide curved roof section adjacent to the main courtyard to produce a millimetre perfect, 21 metre run of trapezoidal coping. At 1430mm wide and 3mm thick, the coping still needed to be easily removable for access to the steam pipe ducting below. With its unique rotate fixing system ABP were able to provide the perfect solution with no compromise in terms of aesthetics or functionality.

The distillery is now open for guided tours and whilst we understand that a wee dram will be on top of any visitors list we hope they appreciate the architecture – designed by Fiona Sinclair to a very high standard . A job well done means that our modern aluminium coping won’t be noticed against the back drop of traditional stone and slate.

Private House Project in Hove.

It’s not often ABP works on domestic projects but when we do the houses are often to a very high specification and design. This was certainly the case when the builder called ABP in to discuss the plans for the parapet walls. Curved in section, curved in plan with apexes and rakes on every drawing. Of course the detail had to be completely watertight and make a bold visual statement. Not a company to duck a challenge the curved coping was surveyed using templates and then fabricated using 3mm sheet  for the tops and 2mm for the sides ( 3mm being thicker doesn’t warp with the heat when the legs are welded on). Balustrades penetrating the coping then needed watertight cover plates and some very careful fitting. Interfacing with other trades on site against a tight time schedule we think you’ll agree that the results bear testimony to our surveying, fabrication and fitting skills. As an additional bonus the builder and client can rest assured that the coping is tested and approved with BBA certification. ABP are the only coping manufacture to have this accreditation.
